Inspirational Success Story:

Dr. Sheryl May Diño-Lainez, PhD is a Doctor of Information Technology and an Associate Professor V at Mindoro State University (MinSU) whose research leadership has made a significant impact in both academia and the community. She is best known for spearheading the “eH2O: An IoT-based Aquaculture Farm Water Quality Management System” project, a flagship R&D initiative of MinSU in collaboration with DOST-MIMAROPA as part of its digitalization program. Now in its second phase, the project has moved beyond theory to produce tangible, real-world benefits for Oriental Mindoro’s aquaculture industry while gaining both national and international recognition. The eH2O project directly addresses the challenges faced by local aquaculture farms, which traditionally relied on labor-intensive and error-prone manual water quality checks. By enabling real-time monitoring accessible through smartphones and computers, the system not only increases efficiency but also allows farmers to respond quickly to sudden fluctuations in water conditions—such as oxygen drops—thereby preventing stock losses and improving overall farm productivity. This innovative solution exemplifies Dr. Lainez’s commitment to developing technology that directly improves livelihoods and promotes sustainable practices.

Her own scholarly record includes: WoS-indexed journals (2 publications); Scopus/IEEE Explore/WoS-indexed journals (2 publications); Other refereed journals (2 international, 1 local); MinSCAT Research Journal (1 ISSN publication). Her work has been cited over 40 times, giving her an h-index of 1, and has earned her multiple distinctions, including a Researcher Excellence Silver Award and several Best Paper Awards. She has also presented her research in both national and international conferences, extending the reach and relevance of her work.

Dr. Lainez holds a patent for an “Android-based Fingerlings Hatchery Production Monitoring System”, currently in the publication phase and awaiting certification from the Intellectual Property Office of the Philippines (IPOPHL). Beyond MinSU, she actively contributes to the academic community as a conference session chair, journal reviewer, and invited speaker on technology and research. She has been an Associate Member of the National Research Council of the Philippines (NRCP) since 2022.

Her commitment extends to community impact, ensuring that research outputs are not confined to academic circles but are shared and applied to improve daily practices in local industries. Through her leadership, Dr. Lainez exemplifies how research, when paired with innovation and service, can transform communities while elevating institutional prestige and advancing knowledge in the field of information technology.
