This study explores the genealogy of place names in barangays (localities) in Culasi, Antique, focusing on their cultural and historical significance. Place names play a crucial role in cultural heritage, serving as windows into a locality's past. In the Philippines, laws underscore the importance of names, connecting them to historical, cultural, or ethnic significance. Culasi, Antique, is examined as a case study, with its name originating from a unique legend involving a friar and flowering trees. The research aims to investigate the history, evolution, cultural values, and genealogy of barangay names in Culasi Antique. Conducted as a qualitative narrative study, the research involves in-depth interviews with nine participants, selected based on specific criteria. The study reveals rich historical roots, demonstrating how the genealogy of barangay names reflects a history shaped by indigenous cultures, colonial influences, and diverse naming patterns. Cultural values associated with barangay genealogy, such as care for vegetation, harmonious relationships, strength, resilience, kindness, and genuine concern, contribute to the cultural identity of the community. Participants express a strong belief in their barangay's genealogy, drawing on sources like the elderly, family traditions, and childhood exposure to the story. The study also highlights the evolution of oral tradition, noting changes influenced by urbanization and modernization in Culasi's culture. The study concludes that studying these names deepens the community's understanding of its roots, fostering a sense of identity, pride, and belonging. Overall, the research emphasizes the cultural and historical significance of place names in shaping the socio-cultural fabric of Philippine society.
