Professional Background
Associate Professor Dr. Tyanai Masiya is an accomplished scholar and public administration specialist at the University of Pretoria, South Africa, where he serves as an Associate Professor in the School of Public Management and Administration. He holds a PhD in Public Administration from the University of the Western Cape, a Master’s degree in Public Administration, and a BSc Honours degree in Politics and Administration from the University of Zimbabwe. His academic career spans more than two decades across leading institutions in Southern Africa and internationally, including the University of Pretoria, Midlands State University, Trinity College in the United States, and the University of the Western Cape.
Prior to joining the University of Pretoria in 2017, Professor Masiya held several leadership, research, and policy-oriented positions, including Research Specialist at the Human Sciences Research Council (HSRC), Acting Director of the Writing Centre at the University of the Western Cape, Assistant to the Vice Chancellor at Africa University, and Clerk of Parliamentary Committees in the Parliament of Zimbabwe. He has extensive experience in teaching undergraduate and postgraduate programmes, supervising master’s and doctoral students, conducting policy-relevant research, and contributing to institutional governance through various academic committees. His teaching portfolio includes public administration theory, governance and public policy, public human capital management, public sector reform, and research methodology. Beyond academia, he contributes to professional capacity development through the National School of Government, where he facilitates programmes on public service management, supervision, communication, and quality assurance.
