Elementary Public School Teachers’ Stress and Burnout: Causes and Coping Strategies

This study aimed to investigate the elementary public school teachers’ stress and burnout and to find out the causes, coping strategies and proposed programs teachers use in the midst of many problems they face. The qualitative research design following a narrative inquiry approach was employed in this study. The participants of the study were seven (7) elementary public school teachers from the District of Laua-an, purposively chosen through a pre-set criterion. An in-depth semi-structured interview was utilized to gather the needed data through an open-ended guide questionnaire. The teachers were inquired on their stresses, burnouts, coping strategies they employed and the proposed program they wanted to utilize as an elementary public school teacher. Nevertheless, the results showed and concluded that elementary public school teachers experienced stresses and burnouts through insomnia, weight loss and mood swings, the causes of stress and burnout encountered by elementary public school teachers were caused by problems with colleagues, attitude of pupils and heavy workloads, the coping strategies they employed were doing relaxing activities and reaching out to others, and the proposed program they wanted to utilize is entitled “Stress and Burnout Management: A Seminar-Workshop to counter the stress and burnout experienced by Elementary Public School Teachers”. Hence, the study recommended that Department of Education should consider the proposed program of the participants, they should conduct mental and psychological seminar and develop strategies to have a proper time management, as well as provide recreational programs and activities.
